Everyday Propane Safety Guidelines
Families and businesses have trusted propane for generations, and for good reason. Installed correctly, maintained regularly, and used as intended, propane is a dependable fuel for heating, cooking, backup power, and much more.
A few simple habits go a long way toward keeping your propane system running safely and efficiently. The safety guide for propane users is a great resource, and these basics are a smart place to start:
- Give your propane equipment breathing room by keeping the surrounding area free of debris, clutter, and anything combustible.
- Store gasoline, paint thinner, and other flammable liquids well away from propane appliances and equipment.
- Check that vents and exhaust openings on your appliances stay clear and unblocked.
- Put a carbon monoxide detector on every floor of your home, and test each one on a regular schedule.
- Use propane appliances only for the job they were designed to do.
- Leave modifications to the professionals; never alter propane appliances or lines on your own.
What Does Propane Smell Like?
While propane is naturally odorless, an odorant is added to make leaks easier to detect. The odorant used is strong, unpleasant, and often compared to sulfur, rotten eggs, or skunk spray.
What to Do If You Smell Gas
If you smell gas in your home or business, follow these steps:
- NO FLAMES OR SPARKS. Immediately put out all smoking materials and other open flames. Do not operate lights, appliances, telephones, or cell phones. Flames or sparks from these sources can trigger an explosion or a fire.
- LEAVE THE AREA IMMEDIATELY. Get everyone out of the building or area where you suspect gas is leaking.
- SHUT OFF THE GAS. Turn off the main gas supply valve on your propane tank if it is safe to do so. To close the valve, turn it to the right (clockwise).
- REPORT THE LEAK. From a neighbor’s home or other nearby building away from the gas leak, call Decatur Bowie Propane right away. If you can’t reach us, call 911 or your local fire department.
- DO NOT RETURN TO THE BUILDING OR AREA until Decatur Bowie Propane, an emergency responder, or a qualified service technician determines that it is safe to do so.
- GET YOUR SYSTEM CHECKED. Before you attempt to use any of your propane appliances, Decatur Bowie Propane or a qualified service technician must check your entire system to ensure that it is leak-free.
